THE MR BLACK STORY

Mr Black was founded in 2013 by designer Tom Baker and pioneering Australian distiller Philip Moore. Tom, a creative-minded coffee connoisseur, joined forces with Philip who was distilling coffee liqueur at his craft distillery in New South Wales. It was to become a match made in caffeinated heaven.

Australia has a thriving coffee culture, with iconic Greek cafes in Sydney and Melbourne being the first to introduce locally roasted coffees in 1910. Mr Black’s aim was to embody this coffee culture and transcend it from morning and daytime drinks into evening with a liqueur.

Mr Black’s mission is for people to appreciate coffee liqueur as much as their morning coffee.

Tasting Notes: Mr Black is rich and dark, with a taste of caramel, marmalade, and a lingering coffee finish.

FOR THE LOVE OF COFFEE

WHAT IS COFFEE LIQUEUR?

Coffee liqueur is an alcoholic beverage made by infusing coffee beans into a distilled spirit, commonly brandy or vodka. Sugar or other sweeteners are then added, resulting in a sumptuous, rich drink which can either be enjoyed on its own or in a range of mouth-watering cocktails.

First recorded in the early 1600s, coffee liqueur was created by a French monk by the name of Frère David who combined coffee beans, sugar, and distilled spirit. The recipe was kept a secret and stayed behind the walls of the monastery for many years before being shared more widely.

With the increasing popularity of coffee has also come a love of coffee liqueur. There are now hundreds of well-known coffee liqueurs to choose from and they have been steadily growing in popularity and featured on cocktail menus around the world. The ever-growing espresso martini trend that began in the 1980s has been a key driver in Mr Black’s worldwide success.
