Interesting Facts

Cuba Libre means ‘Free Cuba’ in Spanish. The drink is often seen as a symbol of Cuban nationalism. The cocktail is so popular in Cuba that it's often referred to simply as ‘Ron con Coca’ (Rum and Coke).

History of the Drink

Cuba Libre is one of the most popular cocktails in the world. It’s said to have been created in Havana, Cuba in 1901 when U.S. Army Captain Theodore Roosevelt and his troops were stationed there during the Spanish-American War. According to legend, Roosevelt ordered a rum and cola at a bar in Havana and declared, "This is the drink of freedom!" The drink quickly became popular with both American troops and locals and it has been a staple of Cuban culture ever since.
