History of the drink

he Mint Julep is a classic cocktail that has been enjoyed for centuries, with its origins dating back to the 18th Century. The drink was first crafted in Virginia using brandy or rum and was a popular choice among the Southern elite.
However, bourbon became the primary spirit used in the Mint Julep and it quickly became a staple of Southern culture. The cocktail is traditionally made with muddled mint leaves, sugar, and bourbon, which are then mixed with crushed ice and served in a silver or pewter cup. The drink is garnished with a sprig of fresh mint and often served with a straw for sipping.
Over the years, the Mint Julep has become closely associated with the Kentucky Derby, where it’s the official drink of the annual horse race. The drink is typically served in a commemorative cup and has become an important part of the event's rich history and traditions.
